From Office Desks to Bar Stools: How Computing Changed How We Work


Sitting here in this lively bar, I’ve got my laptop in front of me, a beer to my right, and a cosy buzz of conversation and music in the air. It’s one of my favourite ways to spend an afternoon—writing, reflecting, and soaking up the human energy around me. There’s something wonderful about being surrounded by people, watching the neon lights glow and dance off the bar's bottles, all while tapping away on my keyboard.

The way we use computers has changed dramatically—from fixed office setups to fully mobile, connected devices that allow us to work from anywhere.

How Computing Used to Work

It’s hard not to step back and appreciate how far we’ve come. When I started working with computers, they were anchored to office desks—big, boxy towers paired with CRT monitors, a wired keyboard, and a clunky mouse. There was no internet, no sense of mobility. That machine, likely a 286, was plugged firmly into a 13-amp socket, designed solely for crunching numbers on spreadsheets or typing up documents.

Working Anywhere: The Modern Reality

Now, here I am. My keyboard and screen are combined into one sleek device that runs on battery power for hours. I’m connected to the world through a hotspot on my phone, and I can work from literally anywhere—be it an office, a coffee shop, or, in this case, a festive bar on a Friday afternoon.

Technology and Human Connection

As Christmas draws near, the bar is filling up. People are getting ready for their holiday nights out, their laughter and excitement building as the evening progresses. Every person here is carrying a tiny, powerful computer in their pocket—a smartphone with a camera that captures the memories of the night in vivid, sharable detail. In real-time, these moments are sent off into the ether, to social media platforms or private group chats. A snippet of their night, immortalized in a digital file.

It’s astonishing to think about. Not long ago, documenting a night like this might have required a bulky camcorder or a dedicated camera. Now, it’s as simple as a tap on a screen. And for many, this seamless recording and sharing of life feels utterly normal—so normal that it barely registers as remarkable.

But I can’t help pausing to appreciate the bigger picture. I think about the transformation of human connection—how far we’ve come from those static office computers. The tools we use to connect and communicate have evolved beyond what we could have imagined. Even if you’re not out tonight, you’re likely at home streaming music or watching a movie on your smart TV—another testament to how deeply digital technology has woven itself into our lives.

And here I am, sitting in a bar, enjoying this moment of quiet reflection amidst the buzz, writing about it all. This, too, will become a digital artefact—a blog post shared with the world, contributing to the endless stream of content that connects us.

So as the night unfolds and this place gets busier, I’ll raise my glass to how far we’ve come and to the exciting ways we continue to connect and share our stories.

Finding the Balance Between Remote Work and Office Life

When I made the shift to working from home, it was like discovering a hidden treasure in my own house. For years now, my study—tucked away upstairs—has been my primary workspace, where peace and quiet reign, and where I can focus on coding and problem-solving without the usual office interruptions. 

Remote working has transformed how we approach productivity, but finding the right balance between working from home and time in the office is still evolving.

The Benefits of Remote Working

Becoming remote wasn’t just a necessary change during Covid; it turned into an unexpected gift. I found myself enjoying the flexibility, the time I got back, and the boost in productivity that comes from being able to focus without distraction. In this cocoon of solitude, I felt more connected to my work and more empowered in my own space.

There’s a certain clarity that comes with remote work, especially for someone like me, a software developer who needs deep concentration and focus to get into the flow. The lack of commute, the comfort of home, and the ability to work undisturbed are all benefits that have helped me thrive. The “come back to the office” chorus, often led by those who prefer to have their teams in sight, doesn’t hold the same allure for me. Productivity speaks for itself; results are measurable. When the work is getting done, and getting done well, it’s easy to question whether office presence is truly necessary. In fact, I’m sure the productivity equation tilts heavily in favour of those quiet hours at home, uninterrupted.

The Reality of Office Days

Yet recently, I’ve started going into the office one day a week, just to see if maybe there’s a side to in-office work I’ve been missing. The shift has been... interesting, a mix of unexpected downsides and delightful surprises. True, my productivity dips on these office days. The environment can be distracting compared to my quiet home setup, and the pace doesn’t quite match that of a dedicated day in my study. But what I’ve found—and perhaps even rediscovered—is the joy of in-person connection.

The Value of Human Connection

Stepping out the door a little earlier, hopping on a bus, and taking a brisk walk to the office stirs a sense of nostalgia. There’s something refreshingly grounding about leaving the house with a purpose, joining the ebb and flow of people heading to work, and the slow hum of the city waking up. Once there, I get to see colleagues not as tiny, pixelated faces on a screen, but in full, 3D, real-life presence. Today, I even ran into a few people I hadn’t seen in ages, some of whom I’d never even met face-to-face until now. It was strange and wonderful, and yes, there’s a certain buzz, a dopamine kick that can’t be replicated over a video call.

I even enjoyed the mid-morning escape from the desk, ducking out for a sandwich and smoothie, a small ritual that felt indulgent, even celebratory. The office itself was nearly silent—ironic, given that most people are still working from home—but in the quiet, there was a soft reminder of why we all do this work together. As I left at four, with the familiar anticipation of a pub meet-up, I felt a balance I hadn’t in a while. Sitting with a pint at the end of the day, typing this post and waiting for a friend, I can feel that strange joy of shared space and human contact.

Maybe there’s no “best” way to work; perhaps it’s about embracing the mix. I’ll always love my quiet, productive days in the study, the freedom remote work offers, and the way it lets me dive deep without distraction. But these occasional office days add a welcome splash of colour, a reminder of community and connection. And maybe that’s the sweet spot: a life where flexibility reigns, where both the solitude and the soft buzz of connection can coexist, each enriching the other in its own quiet way.

Today, I feel grateful for both worlds and the freedom to choose. Life feels balanced—and right now, the world feels like it’s in a good place.

What Is Aphantasia? Living with a Blind Mind’s Eye


A few weeks ago, I had a lightbulb moment that completely changed how I perceive my own mind. I was listening to a podcast where the hosts were discussing a condition called aphantasia, which is essentially a "blind mind's eye." When most people imagine something, they see vivid pictures in their mind. I, however, have never experienced this. Instead, my thoughts come as knowledge or abstract ideas rather than images. For years, I thought this was normal until that podcast opened my eyes to a different reality.

Aphantasia is a condition where people are unable to create mental images, often described as having a “blind mind’s eye.”

The Realisation

During the podcast, the host asked listeners to close their eyes and imagine a giraffe. "What do you see?" they asked. My immediate response was to describe a giraffe: its tall stature, distinctive spots, and the funny little horns on its head. But I didn't actually see a giraffe in my mind's eye—I never have. Instead, I just knew what a giraffe looked like.

Curious, I asked my family and friends the same question. Their answers were unanimous: "I see a giraffe." Except for my eldest child, who, like me, saw nothing. It turns out, this condition might run in the family.

Understanding Aphantasia

Aphantasia is the inability to voluntarily create mental images. This doesn't mean that we lack imagination or creativity; we just experience it differently. For me, thoughts and memories are like abstract concepts, not visual representations. If you show me a picture of a beach and ask me to close my eyes and recall it later, I won't see the image in my mind. Instead, I will remember the details—the sound of waves, the feel of sand underfoot, and the warmth of the sun—but not as a picture.

One of the most enlightening moments was watching a YouTuber describe his experience with aphantasia. He showed a completely black screen and said, "This is what it looks like in our mind's eye." It was a perfect representation of my inner visual experience.

Living with Aphantasia

Discovering I have aphantasia has been both surprising and enlightening. Here are some of the ways aphantasia shows up in everyday life:
  1. Reading and Writing: When I read a book, I don't see the scenes in my mind. Instead, I process the story through the emotions and actions of the characters. My imagination works through the abstract narrative, not visual imagery. Writing, on the other hand, involves describing these abstract thoughts in detail so others can picture them.
  2. Memory and Learning: My memories are like a collection of facts and feelings, not pictures or videos. When recalling an event, I remember the sequence of events and the emotions I felt, but not the visual details. This means I rely more on lists and written notes than mental images to remember things.
  3. Creativity: Despite not having visual imagination, I am still creative. I can come up with ideas and concepts, but I describe them in words rather than pictures. When I brainstorm, I jot down notes or create mind maps to organize my thoughts.
  4. Social Interactions: Conversations about visual experiences can be tricky. When friends talk about visualizing their goals or recalling past trips, I understand them through logical and emotional context rather than visual context. It has made me more attentive to how others perceive the world and has enriched my interactions.

Embracing Aphantasia

Learning about aphantasia has helped me understand myself better and embrace my unique way of thinking. It also sparked fascinating conversations with others who experience the world differently. While I may not "see" with my mind's eye, my thoughts and imagination are vibrant in their own abstract and conceptual ways.

As a software developer, my quest for perfection isn't confined to code and algorithms; it extends to every facet of my life. The relentless pursuit of excellence that drives me in my profession sometimes comes at a price. In this blog post, I'll share my insights on why being a perfectionist isn't always an ideal trait, especially in the world of software development, and how it affects both my personal and professional life.

Perfectionism in software development can lead to stress, delays, and reduced productivity, even though it often feels like a strength.

Here are some of the ways perfectionism shows up in software development:

Endless Stress and Anxiety

In software development, precision is important. However, my perfectionist tendencies often lead me to set exceedingly high standards for myself and my work. The fear of coding errors or bugs can translate into constant stress and anxiety. I've learned that this level of anxiety isn't sustainable in the long run and can even hinder my creativity and productivity.

Procrastination and Analysis Paralysis

Striving for perfect code can sometimes paralyze me with indecision. I find myself endlessly analyzing code or revising a project because it doesn't meet my sky-high expectations. This can lead to procrastination and delay project timelines, ultimately affecting my efficiency and ability to meet deadlines.

Software development is an ever-evolving field that thrives on innovation. My quest for perfection can stifle creativity and discourage taking risks. This can impede progress and limit the potential for groundbreaking solutions.

Physical and Mental Toll

The toll of perfectionism isn't just mental; it's physical too. The constant stress and anxiety associated with perfectionism can lead to health issues, including sleep problems, digestive disorders, and even compromised immune function.

Finding the Balance

As a software developer who strives for perfection in every aspect of life, I've come to realize that there’s a fine line between striving for excellence and falling into self-destructive perfectionism. 

While precision and high standards are essential in my profession, it's equally vital to recognize that perfection isn't always attainable or sustainable. I'm learning to find a balance between pursuing excellence in my work and practicing self-compassion. Embracing imperfections and learning from mistakes is a crucial part of professional growth and personal well-being. In the world of software development, as in life, the pursuit of perfection should be tempered with an understanding that we are all human, and it's okay not to be perfect all the time.

As a child, I was captivated by the mysterious and the paranormal. My fascination often led me to the works of Arthur C. Clarke, who was known for his thought-provoking explorations of science fiction and the unexplained. 

Little did I know that behind his televised narratives on mysteries lay a treasure trove of books and stories, waiting to be discovered. Among them, one story, in particular, has held a special place in my heart - "The Nine Billion Names of God."

“The Nine Billion Names of God” by Arthur C. Clarke is a short story that explores the relationship between technology, purpose, and the nature of existence.

Discovering Arthur C. Clarke

Growing up, I was introduced to Arthur C. Clarke through his television program, which delved into enigmatic phenomena and the paranormal. His eloquent narration and scientific approach made the mysteries of the universe even more captivating. At that time, I had a collection of books by him on paranormal subjects, which both fascinated and frightened me.

However, it was only later in life that I realized Clarke was not just a television personality but also a prolific writer. Among the books I kept from my childhood collection was "Of Time and Stars," a compilation of short stories by Clarke. Little did I know that within this dog-eared book lay my favorite short story of all time.

They have been manually transcribing these names for centuries but believe that with the help of a computer, they can finish the task more quickly. Vic20 Mischief: How a Teenage Prank Sparked My Interest in Programming

Hey there, fellow tech enthusiasts! Today, I want to take you on a nostalgic journey back to the 1980s when I was just a mischievous teenage boy armed with a Commodore Vic20 and an insatiable curiosity for all things tech. Back in those days, personal computers were still relatively new and exciting, and I couldn't resist the temptation to have a bit of fun with them.

Early experiences with computers like the Commodore Vic20 often sparked curiosity and creativity, leading many people into careers in software development.

Discovering the Vic20

Picture this: It was the '80s, and Commodore Vic20 computers were all the rage. You could find them in electronics stores like Dixons and even at unexpected places like Boots the Chemist. These computers were encased in metal display boxes, making them the perfect playground for a mischievous teen like me.

The Perfect Prank

The setup was simple but effective. I had committed a tiny BASIC program to memory – a program that would wreak havoc in the most harmless way possible. It was just about ten lines long, but it was enough to turn an innocent Vic20 into an instrument of chaos.

Here's how it worked:
  1. I'd saunter into one of these stores and nonchalantly approach the Vic20 on display.
  2. With the confidence of a tech-savvy teen, I'd quickly type in my carefully memorized program.
  3. The program was designed to start a timer for about 60 seconds, and then crank up the volume to full blast.
  4. After the countdown, the Vic20 would emit an annoying, high-pitched sound that could wake the dead.
  5. The final twist: I programmed it to lock the keyboard. No matter what the frantic store staff pressed, they couldn't silence the alarm.
  6. The only way out for them was to find the key, unlock the enclosure, and either remove the power supply or cycle the power to stop the commotion.
As soon as I hit the "RUN" command, I'd make a hasty exit, knowing that the Vic20 would play the siren-like alarm, causing chaos and confusion behind me.

Looking back, it's clear that my friends and I were quite the teenage troublemakers, finding endless entertainment in this tech prank. The alarm wasn't some sophisticated sound system; it was just a tiny speaker playing a simple, high-pitched note. But to our teenage ears, it was the epitome of hilarity.

Where It All Started

Little did I know at the time that these early experiments in programming and mischief would eventually lead me to a career as a software engineer. Those innocent days of Vic20 pranks were just the beginning of my journey into the fascinating world of technology.

In today's world of high-tech gadgets and complex software, it's easy to forget the simplicity and charm of those early computers. My Journey Through CodeClan: From Redundancy to Software Development

In the the changing world of technology, learning and adapting are key to staying relevant. In 2016, I found myself facing an unexpected turn in my career path when redundancy knocked on my door.

Changing careers into software development can feel daunting, but structured learning environments like coding bootcamps can provide a clear path forward.

Little did I know that this seemingly unfortunate event would lead me to discover CodeClan, a Scottish gem that would shape my future and transform my skillset. 

As I pen down this blog post, I reflect on my personal journey with CodeClan, an institution that has sadly gone into administration, leaving a void in the Scottish tech education scene.

Discovering CodeClan

In the heart of Edinburgh, nestled amidst the city's rich history, lay CodeClan – a small yet impactful institution committed to teaching software development skills. The news of my redundancy in 2016 marked the beginning of a new chapter, one that was paved by chance, leading me to this haven of knowledge. CodeClan was not just a place of learning; it was a community, a hub of creativity, and an avenue of endless opportunities.

Learning to Code: The Bootcamp Experience

Embarking on a 16-week bootcamp at CodeClan was an exhilarating and intensive experience. Alongside approximately 25 other students, I delved headfirst into the world of coding, navigating my way through intricate algorithms, debugging conundrums, and the art of crafting elegant code. The days were long and demanding, but the atmosphere was brimming with camaraderie, support, and a shared passion for programming.

A Day in the Life

Each weekday was a whirlwind of learning and collaboration. Mornings were dedicated to classroom sessions where our talented tutors guided us through the intricacies of software development. The afternoons brought paired projects, where we honed our skills by working together to tackle real-world coding challenges. Through the highs and lows, CodeClan became more than just a learning institution; it became a second home, a place where we fostered lasting friendships and shared in each other's victories.

Changing Career Direction

The 16 weeks I spent at CodeClan were transformative, and the skills I acquired became the cornerstone of my career shift. Breaking free from the confines of the oil and gas industry, I stepped into a new realm, armed with the ability to craft digital solutions and contribute to the ever-evolving world of technology. CodeClan had not only equipped me with the tools of the trade but had also empowered me with the confidence to embrace change and thrive in a dynamic industry.

Looking back, the most valuable part of the experience wasn’t just learning to code—it was learning how to think differently, solve problems, and adapt to a completely new field.

That shift in mindset is something I still rely on today.

The Closure of CodeClan

However, like all good things, my time at CodeClan came to an end, and it is with a heavy heart that I learned of the institution's recent closure. With immediate effect, the staff bid their farewells, and the ongoing courses were abruptly terminated. The news was a blow not only to the dedicated team behind CodeClan but also to the countless students who had benefited from its expertise and guidance.

The Lasting Impact of CodeClan

While the details of CodeClan's downfall remain elusive, one thing is certain – its impact on Scotland's tech landscape and the countless lives it touched are immeasurable. CodeClan's legacy lives on in the alumni who have gone on to make meaningful contributions to the tech industry, and the employers who have benefited from the well-trained talent pool it nurtured.

Conclusion

As I reflect on my journey, I am filled with gratitude for the time I spent at CodeClan. The memories, the friendships, and the skills I acquired will forever hold a special place in my heart. While the prospect of job creation sounds appealing, history has shown that jobs in the oil and gas industry can often be transient and dependent on market fluctuations. Moreover, many of these companies might have their head offices located outside the UK, meaning that a significant portion of profits and benefits may not circulate within the country.

Environmental Impact and Net Zero Goals

The decision to grant new oil and gas licenses raises concerns about its impact on the environment. As the world faces an urgent need to combat climate change, promoting fossil fuel exploration is counterproductive. The UK's ambitious plans for achieving net-zero emissions will undoubtedly face delays if we continue to invest in oil and gas extraction, undermining the nation's efforts to lead in sustainability.

Will Energy Actually Be Cheaper?

Promising cheaper energy for UK citizens may sound appealing, but the reality is quite different. Who Really Benefits?

Unfortunately, it appears that the major beneficiaries of these new licenses will not be the ordinary citizens of the UK but rather the vested interests of powerful corporations and politicians. The close ties between political figures and energy companies raise concerns about potential conflicts of interest and prioritize private gains over the public's well-being.

Conclusion

In light of the Prime Minister's announcement to issue 100 new oil and gas licenses for the UK, it is crucial for citizens to look beyond the surface-level promises and critically assess the implications of such decisions. Rather than fostering a sustainable future with genuine job growth and environmental stewardship, this move risks compromising the UK's commitment to combating climate change and reaching net-zero emissions.

It is essential to hold our leaders accountable and demand transparent and responsible decision-making that genuinely benefits the nation as a whole, rather than a select few with vested interests. From an engineering and systems perspective, this is a familiar pattern. Decisions are often made based on short-term gains without fully considering long-term outcomes, dependencies, and unintended consequences.

It’s not just about energy—it’s about how we design and manage complex systems.

Searching for Purpose as a Work-From-Home Engineer

One thing I noticed during the pandemic was how different work feels when you can clearly see who it helps.

Building online forms that helped people during that time gave me a stronger sense of purpose than I’d felt in a long time.

Work That Felt Meaningful

During the pandemic, I had the opportunity to develop online forms to assist people in need. 

For the first time in a long while, the connection between the work and the people it was helping felt immediate and visible. The forms were practical, simple things—but they helped people access support during a difficult time.

That changed how the work felt. It stopped being abstract tickets, systems, and projects, and became something more human.

What Changed After the Pandemic

Although the pandemic has ended, I'm still working from home as a software engineer. While I'm grateful for the work I do, I'm currently exploring ways to find a greater sense of purpose and fulfillment in my work and personal life. My family is my main focus in life, and while I enjoy my hobbies, I've been wondering what my overall purpose is.

After some reflection, I've realized that finding purpose is a journey that requires patience, introspection, and a willingness to take action. Here are some tips that have helped me find meaning and fulfillment in my work and personal life.

What Actually Matters to Me

Reflect on Your Values

For me, family is my top priority. I want to make sure that I'm spending quality time with my loved ones and supporting them in any way I can. What values are most important to you? Take some time to reflect on what matters most to you, and use those values as a compass to guide your decisions and actions.

Set Goals That Align With Your Values

Once you've identified your values, set goals that align with them. For me, this means finding ways to spend more time with my family and being present for the moments that matter. Maybe for you, it's about making a positive impact on the world or pursuing a creative passion. When your goals align with your values, you'll feel more purposeful and fulfilled.

Find Meaning in Your Work

Even if your job is not your primary focus in life, you can still find meaning and purpose in your work. For me, developing online forms that helped people during the pandemic was incredibly rewarding. Now, I try to focus on the positive impact my work is having, even if it's smaller. It's important to recognize the value of your contributions, no matter how big or small.

Pursue Your Hobbies

Hobbies are a great way to find fulfillment outside of work. For me, woodworking and working on cars are my go-to activities. Pursuing hobbies can also provide a sense of accomplishment and purpose, as you learn new skills and create something with your own hands.

Embrace Your Role as a Parent

Finally, as a parent, I know how important my role is in shaping the lives of my children. Being a loving and supportive parent is one of the most purposeful things I can do. Embrace the joys and challenges of parenthood, and let your love for your children inspire you to be the best version of yourself.

Trying to Find Balance

I don’t think purpose is something you suddenly discover once and keep forever.

It changes over time, and often comes from smaller things than we expect—family, useful work, building things, helping people, or simply feeling connected to what we do.

I’m probably still figuring it out.

Technology feels very different when it genuinely helps people.

How Working from Home Changed My Life

One thing working from home changed for me was the relationship between work, time, and everyday life.

Living in rural Aberdeenshire, removing the daily commute gave me back hours of time and a much calmer way of working.

Getting Time Back

I used to spend a lot of time commuting to work, but now I can enjoy breakfast with my family and help my kids with their homework after school. I also attend more of their extracurricular activities, like sports games.

Creating a Better Working Environment

I used to dread the daily commute to and from work, but now I no longer have to deal with rush hour traffic or other stressors associated with the traditional office environment. I can work in a quiet, comfortable environment that I've tailored to my needs, which has significantly reduced my stress levels.

More Control Over the Day

One unexpected benefit of working from home was how much unnecessary friction disappeared from everyday life.

Without the daily commute, I gained back both time and energy. The day felt calmer and less fragmented without rushing to get out the door, sitting in traffic, buying lunch, or organising everything around travelling to and from an office.

I also found I had more control over how I worked. Being able to focus in a quieter environment, take breaks when needed, and structure the day more naturally reduced a lot of background stress that I probably hadn’t fully noticed before.

For me, working from home wasn’t just about productivity—it was about creating a way of working that felt more balanced and sustainable.

Another thing that changed was the nature of collaboration itself. A large part of my day is now spent on Teams calls with colleagues in India, Latvia, London, and the US.

At that point, commuting into an office just to spend the day on remote calls starts to feel slightly disconnected from the way modern work actually happens.

The work is already distributed, digital, and location-independent. Working from home simply aligns more naturally with that reality.

What I’d Struggle to Give Up

Working from home isn’t perfect, and I understand why some people prefer office environments.
But for me, having more control over my environment, time, and balance has fundamentally changed how I think about work.
I’d struggle to go back to losing hours each day commuting.

A lot of this also connects to my thoughts on meaningful work and purpose.

It also links closely to how I’ve tried simplifying digital organisation using systems like PARA and Todoist.

Good systems and environments can make everyday work feel much calmer and more manageable.

Imagining Life in 2040 (Written in 2018)

I wrote this in 2018 as a thought experiment about where technology, automation, energy, and society might eventually lead us.

Some parts now feel unrealistic, some accidentally feel quite close to reality, and some say more about the anxieties of the time than the future itself.

Technology Takes Over Everyday Life

I have a fully electric car now. It's good for what it is. Not much fun to drive, all roads in the UK enforce the speed limit automatically through auto management systems. 60mph is the maximum you can go on a good day. I say on a good day because depending on the weather the limit is reduced.

When it's time to leave your assistant tells you to get in the car. I don't travel by car much anymore, everyone works at home now. Most former service jobs are taken care of by bots. I'm partly responsible for this being a software engineer. I helped develop the first delivery bot. Amazon pushed the boundary further and got delivery of prime-down to 2 hours. All cities have an amazon warehouse.

Food is manufactured on our 3D printer, endorsed by Jamie Oliver. It's a clever device. Tesco spent a lot of money developing it. It's funny not only can't I speed in my car but I'm prevented from getting fat by my Tesco 3d printer. My personal assistant tracks my health and Tesco adjusts the nutritional value of my meals.

The average life expectancy now is 120 years of age. A good diet and excellent medical service mean that we are all living much longer. I am "still working", No one retires anymore. The government scrapped the state pension a few years ago.

The Trade-Offs

The big electric companies no longer exist. They missed a trick when Tesla started producing solar roof tiles. Most UK houses are self-sufficient in their power generation. All they need comes from their house roofs. The demand is much lower and houses now run a much safer 5v supply which covers all lights and appliances in the house.

The only exception is car charging points. The supply for this is quite high and dangerous at 1200v dc. Car manufacturers had done quite well getting the range to 500 miles and a charge time of 15 minutes, but with the demise of the national grid charge times at home increased to 48 hours. It means most people don't travel far anymore.

With electric cars and hydrogen commercial vehicles big oil didn't run out more than become in less demand. As a result, the price went back up for a short period which pushed the last remaining cars off the road and reduced demand for oil even more.

Commercial flights are a big problem globally. The solution to green air travel has not been found yet so only short distances can be traveled in the new hydrogen planes. The long haul is a thing of the past. If you want to travel further than former Europe you need to take multiple flights or travel by sea. The USA is all but cut off from the rest of the world with planes not capable of traveling across the Atlantic. Volcanoes in Iceland make a landing there unsafe for the past decade now.

Traveling by sea is the only option. This can now take up to 10 days with the return of sailboats. Not the small wooden ones that were pushed along by the wind, but rather turbines attached to giant floating platforms. With prevailing wind only in one direction means the turbines face the wind and the maritime electrical generators turn propellers.

International communications have also been affected. Satellites have literally been falling out of the sky. This was planned as part of the normal lifecycle as they gradually move closer to earth and burn up in the atmosphere. The problem has been replacing them. Currently, we have no means to carry a payload into space. Lack of rocket fuel, safety concerns, and funding problems meant that satellites were never replaced. No more sky Tv. In some ways, this may be a blessing.

What I Find Interesting Looking Back

So yea 2040 is an ok place to be. It's certainly different from the 2020s. We still have blue skies, and the grass is still green. Local villages have shops and pubs that have reopened. You can drink and drive again. The local shop has 3D printers. Without the ability or need to travel far I know all my neighbors and see them almost every day. Work-life balance is good. Families stay together in their local community too like in the old days.

Looking back now, what interests me most is that many of these imagined changes were really about trade-offs rather than technological progress alone.

The world became more automated and efficient, but also smaller, slower, and more local.

Reading this back now, it feels less like a prediction and more like a snapshot of the kinds of technological and societal changes people were thinking about in 2018.

Some of it now feels unlikely, some surprisingly plausible, and some probably says more about human behaviour than technology itself.

Some of these ideas also connect to my thoughts on technology overcomplication and how automation can sometimes remove the human side of systems.

It also links closely to my reflections on working from home and how technology changes our relationship with place and community.

Technology often changes society in ways we don’t fully predict at the time.

I spend a lot of time thinking about how systems, automation, and technology shape everyday life—and how they can be simplified where possible.

A Year After CodeClan

A year earlier, changing career into software development still felt uncertain.

By this point, seeing my entire CodeClan cohort working in tech made it finally feel real.

I did my first post back in September last year and was able to keep up a run of 43 consecutive weeks of posting each Friday.

Then I slipped up a couple of weekends ago and I was gutted. In the end, it doesn’t really matter but I am the sort of person when I start something it quickly becomes routine and I have to keep it going or I beat myself up about it

I follow a couple of YouTube vloggers who do daily uploads. Where do they get the time? I guess they don’t have full-time jobs and kids. YouTube is their job, but still, it must be a big pressure to keep it up every day with thousands of followers eagerly awaiting your daily post.

I will keep going with my weekly blog and if I miss a week it's no big deal.

Watching the Cohort Move Into Industry

Some good news from my CodeClan Cohort 7 this week. 21 out of 21 are now employed in the software development industry. And most in Scotland. The last of us to secure a software developer job was the other week. Woo hoo! Go Us!

Looking back, that felt like a huge achievement at the time. Many of us had come from completely different industries and backgrounds, and there was a lot of uncertainty about whether the career change would actually work out.

Unfortunately, one was not kept on beyond 6-month probation. I'm not sure of the details but it's a real shame and I imagine it is more to do with the company than the graduate. Based on the 100% success rate they should get something else soon.

Looking Back at the Journey

I happened to be in Edinburgh last week and popped in to see how things were in CodeClan. A few cohorts have passed since I was last there. It was project week for some so it was busy with students working on their projects. It was great to catch up with the folk and particularly one of my fellow graduates who has gone on to be an instructor there. He never got to leave.

I had been asked previously by CodeClan if they could compile my 16 weeks of blogs while there into a PDF book.

Of course, that was my response and they had been working on it with my pictures and all. I got the first look and was amazed to find it has over 80 pages. It should be available via the CodeClan website soon. I'm quite excited to see it go live. I have never actually gone back and read through what I produced last year. Hopefully, the spelling and bad grammar have been fixed. I will add a link here later.

Looking back now, CodeClan was much more than just learning to code.

It was a complete career reset and the start of a very different chapter of life and work.

At the time it felt risky. In hindsight, it was one of the best decisions I made.

This also connects closely to my reflections on meaningful work and career change.

A lot of the thinking behind this transition started much earlier with my interest in early computing and programming.

Learning new technical skills can completely change the direction of your career and life.

I still enjoy solving problems, simplifying systems, and helping people untangle technical challenges.

How I Became a Chartered Engineer (CEng)

For years, becoming a Chartered Engineer was something I kept meaning to do but never quite started.

I had the qualifications, the experience, and the professional membership. What I really lacked was momentum.

I just lacked the personal motivation to get my finger out. I was "comfortable" in my job I didn't need to be chartered. It would be nice but not a must-have.

Why I Put It Off for So Long

The biggest blocker was compiling my experience in chronological order on the application form. I had been working for 20 years so remembering and cramming it all into a few pages was daunting.

I think a lot of experienced engineers fall into the same trap. The more experience you have, the harder it feels to summarise it all into a few pages.

What Finally Changed

The shove I needed was when I looked to move up a grade at work. My "boss" blocked me with a job description. Basically, a badly written list of must-haves to perform the upgrade in position. Lots of airy-fairy statements plucked out of thin air that the person must meet to perform the job. I was doing the job already but had to prove it.

So I set about formulating a case that showed and was backed with evidence of my experience that I could meet the must-haves. I spent a few weeks with a text document open on the side of my desktop, quickly adding experience when I remembered..., reliving my past 20 years.

The document grew and grew and gradually I recounted all the projects I had worked on. I had ticked off all the job requirements (must-haves) and provided real evidence of how I met them.

I polished it a bit adding in real must-haves the job holder should have and forwarded it to my "boss" and was moved up a grade. The bonus was I now had a full career review down on paper (or digitally). The dreaded application form for chartered engineer would be easy now.

I sought out 2 sponsors as a reference, added all my details, did some more polishing to my career history, and sent it off and waited...

I was invited for an interview shortly after. A time and date were set for me to be at a hotel in Altens to be "grilled".

I had a few weeks to prepare for my interview. The format would be for me to present for 15 minutes and then answer questions for an hour.

The application pack I had downloaded from the IET website had a guide to what was expected in the presentation and what the interview would cover.

Preparing for the Interview

I prepared a pack of 5 slides covering projects (maximum allowed) I have worked on and ticked off all the skills I needed to have. I then printed 3 packs with my slides, my application, training evidence, work evidence, and my CV and presented them neatly in a clear plastic folder.

I also added a couple of pics of my Tiger, the kit car I built. I felt like a software engineer I wanted to be able to show I also have electrical and mechanical hands-on skills too.

A few weeks later, I donned my suit and tie and headed for my interview. Confident I had prepared well it was time to be a shining example of a potential chartered engineer.

I met with a panel of 3 interviewers. The IET guide said there would be 2! Oh well, the more the merrier.

We introduced each other and I sat at one side of the table and they at the other. I did my presentation and quickly talked through all my slides.

The Interview Wasn’t What I Expected

The next part I was dreading, what if I couldn't answer the questions? What if I wasn't qualified? It didn't matter. What happened was a good conversation about my experience. One interviewer was leading the conversation and another was checking off where I met the skills required as I gave my answers.

Tiger kit car built as part of hands-on engineering and fabrication projectsWhat surprised me most was that it didn’t feel like an interrogation. It felt more like an experienced conversation about projects, decisions, and engineering work I had already done.

The main point I had to quickly adapt to was to say I rather than we. Working as a team for so long I am accustomed to saying 'we' rather than 'I'd, which caught me out a couple of times. I had said we had created some procedure and had to correct myself and said I, one interviewer said are you sure, while the other chipped in with the front page of the procedure showing my name on the front cover as the author. Thankfully I had put a copy In the interview pack.

The rest is a bit of a blur but an enjoyable blur. It was a great opportunity to talk about what you have been doing for the last 20 years.

In the end, the interviewers came across the pictures of my Tiger and probably had just as many questions about it and how I had built it, an easy subject to talk about without any prep.

So that was it, it was about 1hr 45min when we finished, and I left confident I had done my best. My interviewers couldn't give me any indication of whether I had passed or failed. I would be contacted in due course.

6 weeks later I received an email. My application must have been good, my presentation and interview must have been good. I was invited to join the engineering council as a chartered engineer.

What I Learned From the Process

Go me! Why didn't I do that a long time ago? With a bit of effort and lots of preparation, the whole process is very straightforward and not as daunting as first thought.

Looking back, the process was far less intimidating than I had built it up to be in my head.

Most of the challenge was simply taking the time to reflect properly on years of experience and organise it into evidence.

If you’re considering becoming chartered but keep putting it off, my advice would simply be to start gathering your experience together. Once you begin, it becomes much more manageable.

My Early Days in Digital Transformation

Starting a new role at Aberdeen City Council felt like stepping into a very different world from the engineering environments I had worked in previously.

Suddenly I was surrounded by digital services, accessibility discussions, web design, smart city ideas, and people trying to modernise large public systems.

So I'd consider myself part of the team now at Aberdeen City Council. I've managed to get into the swing of how things work,

I have lots of new friends and colleagues, and I am really getting into the hot desking. I get to sit at a different desk each day and get to sit with different people most days. Although the folk I work with directly in the Team generally sit in the same area.

Adjusting to a New Digital Workplace

I have had a few days working from home and it's good. Probably the easiest login from home I have ever had or used yet. No hassle, no dongle, no phone app, and no code to remember.

I also found myself surrounded by people who were genuinely passionate about improving digital services and modernising how the council worked.

A couple of interesting tech projects I heard about this week is Smart Benches and City Lab.

Discovering Civic Technology

ACC has commissioned a couple of Smart Benches for Aberdeen City. They are solar-powered smartphone recharging centers in the form of a park bench. So if you are low or run out of charge you can pop by one of the benches, take a load off and recharge your phone. This is a great concept and it will be good to see how they work and are used when installed. I do have concerns about a USB point exposed to the elements but I'm sure that has been thought of.

The other initiative is City Lab, which is run jointly between The University of Aberdeen, Robert Gordon’s University, and ACC. It brings together students, ACC staff, and partner organizations for one term to design and build sustainable projects for the city.

ACC has identified areas where new projects would help the city and community. Students get to be creative by brainstorming and developing their ideas. I wish I could have had access to something like this when I studied at RGU.

Some of the projects going through this scheme are smart tiles that generate electricity by people walking on them to power traffic lights, smart school busses with teaching capacity, and smart signage.

Seeing How Digital Services Are Designed

I can't say too much but help came from a design agency called Screen Media. It was great being able to work with these guys and get an insight into the whole web design process.

A lot of thought goes into layout, colours, and accessibility. I was well impressed with the draft and excited to be involved with the process so far. It also goes to show there is a lot more to good web design than code and a bit of CSS. Looking back now, this was probably one of the first times I really started appreciating how much user experience, accessibility, structure, and communication matter in digital services.

What Stayed With Me

Looking back, this period feels like the start of a major shift in how I thought about technology.

I was moving away from purely physical engineering problems and becoming increasingly interested in systems, usability, accessibility, and how technology shapes everyday public services.

The pics this week are not mine (I wish) I found them on display at the Brewdog next door to Marischal College. They are part of an Aberdeen Star Wars Exhibition. Thought they were cool, and as ever I forgot to note who the artist is. I like them though.

This also connects closely to my reflections on visual thinking and systems thinking.

A lot of the same ideas around simplicity and usability also appear in my post about technology overcomplication.

The transition into digital work also links naturally to my reflections on changing career into software development.

I’m still fascinated by how technology, systems, and design affect the way people interact with services every day.
