How Being a Visual Thinker Shaped How I Solve Problems

If you’ve ever felt like you think differently from the people around you, you’re probably right.

For me, that difference turned out to be visual thinking—understanding the world through pictures, systems, and connections rather than words.

For the longest time, I couldn't put my finger on why I struggled with traditional methods of learning, particularly in language-based subjects.

This discovery was like a lightbulb moment, helping explain why I found some things difficult while others came naturally.

The Problem: Traditional Learning Didn’t Fit

Throughout my academic journey, I struggled with the standard approach to education, especially in subjects that relied heavily on verbal communication.

English classes were particularly challenging, with their emphasis on written assignments and complex language structures. Despite putting in effort, I couldn't fully grasp them. Words felt jumbled, and it was frustrating to watch others progress more easily.

Discovering Visual Thinking

It wasn't until later in life that I came across the idea of visual thinking—and suddenly everything made sense.

I realised I naturally understand systems, objects, and processes by visualising them. When I look at something mechanical, I don’t read it—I see how it works.

Where It Became a Strength

Visual thinking isn’t a weakness—it’s a different kind of strength.

It allows you to see patterns, connections, and relationships that aren’t always obvious. It’s like having an internal model of how things fit together.

This became clear in areas like maths and engineering, where I could visualise concepts, map systems, and work through problems more naturally.

How I Learned to Work With It

Once I understood this, I started working with it rather than against it.

Diagrams, flowcharts, and visual tools became essential. They turned complex ideas into something I could understand quickly.

Technology helped too—interactive tools, simulations, and anything that made systems visible rather than abstract.

The Bigger Pattern

This isn’t just about learning styles—it’s about how people interact with systems.

Some people think in words. Others think in visuals, patterns, and structures. When systems are designed for only one way of thinking, they become harder for everyone else to use.

Related Thinking

This way of thinking didn’t come from nowhere—it developed over time through different experiences.

What This Means

Thinking differently isn’t a weakness—it’s just a different way of understanding systems.

Traditional approaches often favour language and linear thinking, but many real-world problems are visual and interconnected.

In practice, that means finding ways to work with how you naturally think, rather than forcing yourself into a system that doesn’t fit.

Understanding how systems actually work often makes them easier to fix and improve.

What Video Games and Technology Are Really Teaching Kids

So yeah, I read this week that picking your nose and eating it is good for you. It boosts your immune system.

I took great pleasure in telling my boys this. 

I had been told for the past 46 years it was bad for you and I have been dutifully passing on this message. I won't take up this habit but the boys will be boys and it will save me from telling them off for it.

Looking back, this post wasn’t really about nose picking at all. It was about how quickly technology was becoming part of childhood learning, creativity, and problem solving.

It got me thinking what else have we been told when growing up is bad for you but might be good. Living in our nanny state maybe boogies are not alone.

Questioning What We’re Told

Tv is bad for you? Son 2 (age 6) has a massive vocabulary. He got up the other morning and I asked him how he was and he responded with "fantastic" While helping me make my packed lunch he asked are the roots on the spring onions were "edible". I don't recall teaching him these words so can only assume it was the TV. He likes his TV. Pepa Pig has even taught him a bit of French... he announced one day "Bonjour Delphine donkey!". (I only know it was Peppa Pig as I have seen that episode) We have 3 TVs in the house and something is normally on. Mostly on demand these days, be it Netflix, Amazon, or YouTube.

Why Simulators Fascinated Me

My other son Son 1 (age 9) is a tractor daft. He asked for Farming Simulator 17 for his Christmas. It's a game that runs on the computer. Santa snuck in on Christmas Eve and installed it on the Mac in my study. Son 1 likes nothing better than doing a bit of farming. It's a very realistic 3D simulator. He has taught himself how to manage an entire farm. Buying the equipment, budgeting, sowing crops, and reaping the rewards from his harvest.

Children Growing Up With Technology

The tech in this game is brilliant. The 3D rendering and fully explorable maps are "awesome" (to quote Son 1. It even has a mud mod pack that simulates real mud across the farm so at the end of the day you have to wash your machinery with your 3D jet wash. It's certainly more realistic than any game I had growing up. I'm sure by the time Son 1 is old enough to work he will probably be able to run a profitable farm with little or no training. He has taught himself with this game how to farm and also gained a wealth of knowledge on tractors, combines, and other machinery, even to the point when we are out in the car we have to take the back roads if there is a chance of spotting some farm machinery.

So we are told computer games are bad for you!

All this farming doesn't really matter as Son 1 wants to be an Architect. Possibly inspired by Minecraft, another 3D simulator. Actually, if I remember right he wants to be a successful architect designing big buildings, and then when he is "rich" buys a farm and just does all the "cool tractor-type jobs".

So are these games a kind of training? A way of self-teaching. They seem to go hand in hand with YouTube too, where you watch a clip on how to do something on your farm and then recreate it.

Technology as a Learning Tool

Kids using iPads is also supposed to be bad for them. Mine both have iPads. Both with Military spec Griffin Defender covers. These are supposed to be tuff. Despite this, I have changed the screen on Son 1's three times. Not an easy job. Getting the glass off without destroying the wifi antenna is almost impossible. And those tiny screws I can nearly see them let alone pick them up. Thankfully parts are cheap on eBay. There are also many YouTube videos on how to change the screen.

Son1 and 2 are a dab hand at using the iPad it's almost second nature to them, in fact, it is. They don't remember a time before them. They learn so much from the apps. They can be driving trains, or identifying animals. playing with numbers, spelling, farming (more farming), being a doctor or dentist, there is even one app where you give Santa a shave.

As an aside, they are learning to install their own apps (free ones) and configure them, manage their memory space, and understand the need to recharge the battery.

Son 2 has Bluetooth headphones he uses with his iPad. He repeats the "Your Bluetooth device is connected" message every time they are turned on. He has destroyed many corded headphones by chewing the cable so wireless and Tech solve this problem.

I did try to introduce Son 2 to the flight simulator on the Mac. A step too far! It didn't go well. He likes pressing buttons. Perhaps he won't be a pilot.

Technology as a Learning Tool

So yeah I might not encourage eating bogies but I will let my kids embrace technology. If they are learning something it can only be good for them and set them up with valuable life skills.

What This Made Me Realise

A couple of coding books for kids arrived in the post this week. One for the new Raspberry Pi and one for Scratch. They are colourful with lots of pictures, so here's hoping I can take the boys back a step and show them what goes into their games, iPads, and YouTube. I'll let you know how I get on...

Looking back now, it feels obvious that games and simulators were becoming educational tools as much as entertainment.

Minecraft, farming simulators, YouTube tutorials, and creative apps were quietly teaching problem solving, systems thinking, planning, and creativity.

In many ways, kids were teaching themselves using technology long before schools fully adapted to it.

A lot of this also connects to my reflections on visual thinking and different learning styles.

The same fascination with interactive learning and systems also influenced projects like my browser-based text adventure game Redcastle.

Many of the same ideas around creativity, systems, and engineering also appear in my reflections on LEGO Technic and engineering mindset.

I’ve always been fascinated by how people learn through technology, creativity, and problem solving.

A lot of the same thinking now shapes the technical, systems, and digital work I still enjoy today.

HAVE I BECOME AN EDUCATION JUNKIE?

So this is it. No more student. I've finished and submitted all my CodeClan continuous assessment work for my PDA. It's just a matter of waiting for my certificate to appear in the post and I’ll have a Professional Development Award in Software Development.

I guess it can go in the drawer with my Being In Electrical and Electronic Engineering, my Diploma in Design and Innovation, and my Certificate of User Interface Design and Evaluation.

Have I become an education junkie?

Anyway, it's a good feeling and I'm pleased with what I have been able to achieve. The Careers Lady at school should be eating her hat by now, given she suggested my only hope was trying to get into the back door at a college. Oh, how we laughed!

I went to Fortrose Academy on the BlackIsle for my secondary school. A great little school although I didn't really appreciate it at the time, I had fun. I stayed all the way through to my 6th year and left with a jolly array of subjects including 8 Ordinary grades, 5 Higher’s, and a Certificate of Six Year Studies.

The big players of Maths and Physics are there along with Technical Drawing and Art and Design. I guess I was destined to be an Engineer. My qualifications became bigger and better from here on in...

RGU - BEng Honours Electrical and Electronic Engineering (1993)

When I finished school in 1988 I headed off to Aberdeen and enrolled in Robert Gordon's Institute of Technology (pre-University Days) to study for a Bachelor in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. I had sufficient qualifications to get in without an Interview (or go in via the back door). It was a four-year course with honours. I did the first 3 years and a chance conversation with a lecturer suggested that Shell UK were looking to take students as a part of an industrial placement. I applied and was lucky enough to get a super rare industrial placement. I said goodbye to my fellow classmates and went my own way with Shell for a year. I returned and completed my honours year in 1992 and graduated in 1993, RGIT had now become RGU so I was leaving with a University Honours Degree…

Open University - Diploma in Design and Innovation (2001)

Roll on a few years and while browsing the Open University website a course in Design and Innovation caught my eye. It was a 2-year Diploma and could be studied remotely with Tutor Marked Assignments and some exams. It was all about product design and how to evaluate products and innovate new ideas. The course was quite pricey but I approached my boss at the time and Aker Kvaerner agreed to pay my fees and sponsor me. So free education so long as I did not leave within two years. This course I really enjoyed and learnt a heap about product design and innovation. The course was a real inspiration and I really took to the method of teaching, where you were actively following a set course and had to submit an assignment roughly every month. and then at the end of the year, there were a couple of exams. I graduated with my Diploma in Design and Innovation and had another certificate.

Open University - Certificate in User Interface Design and Evaluation (2009)

A few years later while back browsing the Open University website a course in User Interface Design and Evaluation interested me. At the time I was heavily involved in creating a new User Interface for Topside Control Systems for offshore, so my thoughts were hey this might help make better control system user interfaces. Another discussion with my boss and Aker Solutions was sponsoring me and paying for the course, More free education and of course I was tied in for another two years. This was another great course with Tutor Marked Assignments and an exam at the end. I graduated with a Certificate in User Interface Design and Evaluation.





So this was the winding road to my main qualifications and brings us back to this year and my PDA in Software Development with CodeClan.

I have done many other shorter courses over the years in various subjects. I did another couple of courses with the Open University paid from my own pocket, First up Digital Photography (I couldn't pass this by my boss for sponsorship) and second a Certificate in Web Design (again I couldn't pass this by my boss for sponsorship either, although I did try).

Some other training I was lucky to get over the years as part of my job where I have a certificate includes:


Rockwell Automation - Control Logix Programming - Accelerated. This was a week-long course where I learned to use Rockwell PLCs and program them in a classroom environment.

Wonderware InTouch - This was a two-week course where again I was trained in a classroom environment in a facility in Livingstone. Excellent product and one of my favourites for creating quick and robust SCADA applications.

ICONICS Genesis 32 and 64 - Separated by a few years I have had formal training in the development of both Genesis 32 and more recently Genesis 64 SCADA products.

Introduction to Functional Safety Understanding and applying IEC-61508…

So to the Careers, Lady in Fortrose Academy back in the ’80s who suggested I would not be able to get into University and suggested that I may be able to squeeze in the back door of a college. Not cool but thank you. Your pessimism probably helped push me to achieve more.
