The Great Flap: Unrealistic Deadlines in Software Development

Unrealistic deadlines in software development are one of the most common causes of stress, burnout, and failed software projects.

There comes a point in every project when the calm façade begins to crack.

People start talking a bit faster, typing a bit louder, and suddenly there’s an air of impending doom.

That’s right — the Great Flap has begun.

You can almost feel it in the corridors (or Teams calls).

The sense that if this particular bit of software isn’t live by Friday afternoon, civilisation as we know it will collapse. Cats and dogs living together. Total anarchy.

The myth of deadlines in software development

It usually starts with someone saying, “We’ve got a tight deadline, but I’m sure we can make it if we all pull together.”

Ah yes. That old chestnut.

Because nothing motivates quite like the unspoken threat of collective disappointment.

The deadline, of course, was never realistic. It was set optimistically in a meeting some weeks ago by people who do not, and never will, understand what “refactoring a data model” actually means.

But now here we are, marching valiantly towards an impossible finish line, as if sheer willpower and a few motivational emails will somehow defy the laws of time and logic.

Why software development takes time (and can’t be rushed)

Here’s the thing. Software isn’t an emergency service. You can’t just switch on the sirens, shout “let’s go, team!” and expect miracles.

It’s an art form — slow, deliberate, and occasionally maddening.
It requires thought, patience, and the ability to spend three hours wondering why something doesn’t work, only to realise you missed a semicolon.

You don’t become an expert overnight. You don’t take a thousand vague requirements, a handful of “blue sky thinking” ideas, and end up with the digital equivalent of the Holy Grail.

But try explaining that to someone who thinks “agile” means “done by next week”.

How project spreadsheets create false deadlines

No Great Flap is complete without the sacred text: the project spreadsheet.

Usually named something like:
ProjectPlan_FINAL_NEW_latest2(1)_USETHISVERSION.xlsx

Inside, you’ll find a riot of colour — red cells, amber cells, inexplicable greens — and formulas that worked perfectly on some long-forgotten project but now throw up #VALUE! errors.

There’ll be a tab called Risks with two items on it (“Christmas holidays” and “staff sickness”), and another called Lessons Learned which, naturally, is empty.

Why teams push for unrealistic deadlines

Then comes the pushing.
“Just one more sprint.”
“Just one last push.”
“We’re nearly there!”

We are not nearly there.

We are, in fact, somewhere between despair and déjà vu — that familiar territory where everyone’s pretending this time will be different.

Some developers push back. Others smile politely and get on with doing things properly, at their own quiet pace. Because we’ve all learned that panic doesn’t make software appear any faster. It just produces tired developers and broken code.

Why experienced developers ignore unrealistic deadlines

So, what do you do? You nod. You smile. You attend the daily stand-up, listen to the pep talks, and then quietly go back to your desk (or kitchen table) to do things the right way.

You focus on quality, on craft, on not being the person who signed off a bug-ridden disaster because someone shouted “urgent” enough times.

And when the inevitable happens — when the deadline slips, the panic subsides, and everyone suddenly decides it’s fine after all — you just sip your tea, raise an eyebrow, and carry on.

Because unrealistic deadlines don’t speed up software development — they just make bad outcomes more likely.

Because you’ve seen it all before.

You’ll see it all again.

And deep down, you know that calm competence beats frantic enthusiasm every single time.

From Office Desks to Bar Stools: How Computing Changed How We Work


Sitting here in this lively bar, I’ve got my laptop in front of me, a beer to my right, and a cosy buzz of conversation and music in the air. It’s one of my favourite ways to spend an afternoon—writing, reflecting, and soaking up the human energy around me. There’s something wonderful about being surrounded by people, watching the neon lights glow and dance off the bar's bottles, all while tapping away on my keyboard.

The way we use computers has changed dramatically—from fixed office setups to fully mobile, connected devices that allow us to work from anywhere.

How Computing Used to Work

It’s hard not to step back and appreciate how far we’ve come. When I started working with computers, they were anchored to office desks—big, boxy towers paired with CRT monitors, a wired keyboard, and a clunky mouse. There was no internet, no sense of mobility. That machine, likely a 286, was plugged firmly into a 13-amp socket, designed solely for crunching numbers on spreadsheets or typing up documents.

Working Anywhere: The Modern Reality

Now, here I am. My keyboard and screen are combined into one sleek device that runs on battery power for hours. I’m connected to the world through a hotspot on my phone, and I can work from literally anywhere—be it an office, a coffee shop, or, in this case, a festive bar on a Friday afternoon.

Technology and Human Connection

As Christmas draws near, the bar is filling up. People are getting ready for their holiday nights out, their laughter and excitement building as the evening progresses. Every person here is carrying a tiny, powerful computer in their pocket—a smartphone with a camera that captures the memories of the night in vivid, sharable detail. In real-time, these moments are sent off into the ether, to social media platforms or private group chats. A snippet of their night, immortalized in a digital file.

It’s astonishing to think about. Not long ago, documenting a night like this might have required a bulky camcorder or a dedicated camera. Now, it’s as simple as a tap on a screen. And for many, this seamless recording and sharing of life feels utterly normal—so normal that it barely registers as remarkable.

But I can’t help pausing to appreciate the bigger picture. I think about the transformation of human connection—how far we’ve come from those static office computers. The tools we use to connect and communicate have evolved beyond what we could have imagined. Even if you’re not out tonight, you’re likely at home streaming music or watching a movie on your smart TV—another testament to how deeply digital technology has woven itself into our lives.

And here I am, sitting in a bar, enjoying this moment of quiet reflection amidst the buzz, writing about it all. This, too, will become a digital artefact—a blog post shared with the world, contributing to the endless stream of content that connects us.

So as the night unfolds and this place gets busier, I’ll raise my glass to how far we’ve come and to the exciting ways we continue to connect and share our stories.

The Perfectionist’s Dilemma in Software Development

As a software developer, my quest for perfection isn't confined to code and algorithms; it extends to every facet of my life. The relentless pursuit of excellence that drives me in my profession sometimes comes at a price. In this blog post, I'll share my insights on why being a perfectionist isn't always an ideal trait, especially in the world of software development, and how it affects both my personal and professional life.

Perfectionism in software development can lead to stress, delays, and reduced productivity, even though it often feels like a strength.

Here are some of the ways perfectionism shows up in software development:

Endless Stress and Anxiety

In software development, precision is important. However, my perfectionist tendencies often lead me to set exceedingly high standards for myself and my work. The fear of coding errors or bugs can translate into constant stress and anxiety. I've learned that this level of anxiety isn't sustainable in the long run and can even hinder my creativity and productivity.

Procrastination and Analysis Paralysis

Striving for perfect code can sometimes paralyze me with indecision. I find myself endlessly analyzing code or revising a project because it doesn't meet my sky-high expectations. This can lead to procrastination and delay project timelines, ultimately affecting my efficiency and ability to meet deadlines.

Imposter Syndrome

Perfectionism can fuel imposter syndrome—a feeling that I'm not good enough or that I don't belong in the field. The constant self-criticism and comparison to others can erode my self-esteem and confidence in my abilities as a developer.

Strained Collaboration

Collaborative software development is a team effort, and perfectionism can sometimes hinder effective collaboration. I may have unrealistically high expectations for my colleagues, which can lead to tension and difficulties in working together harmoniously.

Inhibition of Innovation

Software development is an ever-evolving field that thrives on innovation. My quest for perfection can stifle creativity and discourage taking risks. This can impede progress and limit the potential for groundbreaking solutions.

Physical and Mental Toll

The toll of perfectionism isn't just mental; it's physical too. The constant stress and anxiety associated with perfectionism can lead to health issues, including sleep problems, digestive disorders, and even compromised immune function.

Finding the Balance

As a software developer who strives for perfection in every aspect of life, I've come to realize that there’s a fine line between striving for excellence and falling into self-destructive perfectionism. 

While precision and high standards are essential in my profession, it's equally vital to recognize that perfection isn't always attainable or sustainable. I'm learning to find a balance between pursuing excellence in my work and practicing self-compassion. Embracing imperfections and learning from mistakes is a crucial part of professional growth and personal well-being. In the world of software development, as in life, the pursuit of perfection should be tempered with an understanding that we are all human, and it's okay not to be perfect all the time.

Vic20 Mischief: How a Teenage Prank Sparked My Interest in Programming

Hey there, fellow tech enthusiasts! Today, I want to take you on a nostalgic journey back to the 1980s when I was just a mischievous teenage boy armed with a Commodore Vic20 and an insatiable curiosity for all things tech. Back in those days, personal computers were still relatively new and exciting, and I couldn't resist the temptation to have a bit of fun with them.

Early experiences with computers like the Commodore Vic20 often sparked curiosity and creativity, leading many people into careers in software development.

Discovering the Vic20

Picture this: It was the '80s, and Commodore Vic20 computers were all the rage. You could find them in electronics stores like Dixons and even at unexpected places like Boots the Chemist. These computers were encased in metal display boxes, making them the perfect playground for a mischievous teen like me.

The Perfect Prank

The setup was simple but effective. I had committed a tiny BASIC program to memory – a program that would wreak havoc in the most harmless way possible. It was just about ten lines long, but it was enough to turn an innocent Vic20 into an instrument of chaos.

Here's how it worked:
  1. I'd saunter into one of these stores and nonchalantly approach the Vic20 on display.
  2. With the confidence of a tech-savvy teen, I'd quickly type in my carefully memorized program.
  3. The program was designed to start a timer for about 60 seconds, and then crank up the volume to full blast.
  4. After the countdown, the Vic20 would emit an annoying, high-pitched sound that could wake the dead.
  5. The final twist: I programmed it to lock the keyboard. No matter what the frantic store staff pressed, they couldn't silence the alarm.
  6. The only way out for them was to find the key, unlock the enclosure, and either remove the power supply or cycle the power to stop the commotion.
As soon as I hit the "RUN" command, I'd make a hasty exit, knowing that the Vic20 would play the siren-like alarm, causing chaos and confusion behind me.

Looking back, it's clear that my friends and I were quite the teenage troublemakers, finding endless entertainment in this tech prank. The alarm wasn't some sophisticated sound system; it was just a tiny speaker playing a simple, high-pitched note. But to our teenage ears, it was the epitome of hilarity.

Where It All Started

Little did I know at the time that these early experiments in programming and mischief would eventually lead me to a career as a software engineer. Those innocent days of Vic20 pranks were just the beginning of my journey into the fascinating world of technology.

In today's world of high-tech gadgets and complex software, it's easy to forget the simplicity and charm of those early computers. But it's important to remember that every tech enthusiast has a starting point, and for me, it was the mischievous adventures with a Commodore Vic20 that ignited my passion for all things tech.

Looking back, it wasn’t really about the prank. It was about understanding how systems worked, how small pieces of code could control behaviour, and how technology could be both powerful and unpredictable.

My Journey Through CodeClan: From Redundancy to Software Development

In the the changing world of technology, learning and adapting are key to staying relevant. In 2016, I found myself facing an unexpected turn in my career path when redundancy knocked on my door.

Changing careers into software development can feel daunting, but structured learning environments like coding bootcamps can provide a clear path forward.

Little did I know that this seemingly unfortunate event would lead me to discover CodeClan, a Scottish gem that would shape my future and transform my skillset. 

As I pen down this blog post, I reflect on my personal journey with CodeClan, an institution that has sadly gone into administration, leaving a void in the Scottish tech education scene.

Discovering CodeClan

In the heart of Edinburgh, nestled amidst the city's rich history, lay CodeClan – a small yet impactful institution committed to teaching software development skills. The news of my redundancy in 2016 marked the beginning of a new chapter, one that was paved by chance, leading me to this haven of knowledge. CodeClan was not just a place of learning; it was a community, a hub of creativity, and an avenue of endless opportunities.

Learning to Code: The Bootcamp Experience

Embarking on a 16-week bootcamp at CodeClan was an exhilarating and intensive experience. Alongside approximately 25 other students, I delved headfirst into the world of coding, navigating my way through intricate algorithms, debugging conundrums, and the art of crafting elegant code. The days were long and demanding, but the atmosphere was brimming with camaraderie, support, and a shared passion for programming.

A Day in the Life

Each weekday was a whirlwind of learning and collaboration. Mornings were dedicated to classroom sessions where our talented tutors guided us through the intricacies of software development. The afternoons brought paired projects, where we honed our skills by working together to tackle real-world coding challenges. Through the highs and lows, CodeClan became more than just a learning institution; it became a second home, a place where we fostered lasting friendships and shared in each other's victories.

Changing Career Direction

The 16 weeks I spent at CodeClan were transformative, and the skills I acquired became the cornerstone of my career shift. Breaking free from the confines of the oil and gas industry, I stepped into a new realm, armed with the ability to craft digital solutions and contribute to the ever-evolving world of technology. CodeClan had not only equipped me with the tools of the trade but had also empowered me with the confidence to embrace change and thrive in a dynamic industry.

Looking back, the most valuable part of the experience wasn’t just learning to code—it was learning how to think differently, solve problems, and adapt to a completely new field.

That shift in mindset is something I still rely on today.

The Closure of CodeClan

However, like all good things, my time at CodeClan came to an end, and it is with a heavy heart that I learned of the institution's recent closure. With immediate effect, the staff bid their farewells, and the ongoing courses were abruptly terminated. The news was a blow not only to the dedicated team behind CodeClan but also to the countless students who had benefited from its expertise and guidance.

The Lasting Impact of CodeClan

While the details of CodeClan's downfall remain elusive, one thing is certain – its impact on Scotland's tech landscape and the countless lives it touched are immeasurable. CodeClan's legacy lives on in the alumni who have gone on to make meaningful contributions to the tech industry, and the employers who have benefited from the well-trained talent pool it nurtured.

Conclusion

As I reflect on my journey, I am filled with gratitude for the time I spent at CodeClan. The memories, the friendships, and the skills I acquired will forever hold a special place in my heart. While CodeClan's doors may have closed, its spirit lives on in each student it empowered. As we bid farewell to this cherished institution, I am reminded that the end of one chapter marks the beginning of another. A Year After CodeClan

A year earlier, changing career into software development still felt uncertain.

By this point, seeing my entire CodeClan cohort working in tech made it finally feel real.

I did my first post back in September last year and was able to keep up a run of 43 consecutive weeks of posting each Friday.

Then I slipped up a couple of weekends ago and I was gutted. In the end, it doesn’t really matter but I am the sort of person when I start something it quickly becomes routine and I have to keep it going or I beat myself up about it

I follow a couple of YouTube vloggers who do daily uploads. Where do they get the time? I guess they don’t have full-time jobs and kids. YouTube is their job, but still, it must be a big pressure to keep it up every day with thousands of followers eagerly awaiting your daily post.

I will keep going with my weekly blog and if I miss a week it's no big deal.

Watching the Cohort Move Into Industry

Some good news from my CodeClan Cohort 7 this week. 21 out of 21 are now employed in the software development industry. And most in Scotland. The last of us to secure a software developer job was the other week. Woo hoo! Go Us!

Looking back, that felt like a huge achievement at the time. Many of us had come from completely different industries and backgrounds, and there was a lot of uncertainty about whether the career change would actually work out.

Unfortunately, one was not kept on beyond 6-month probation. I'm not sure of the details but it's a real shame and I imagine it is more to do with the company than the graduate. Based on the 100% success rate they should get something else soon.

Looking Back at the Journey

I happened to be in Edinburgh last week and popped in to see how things were in CodeClan. A few cohorts have passed since I was last there. It was project week for some so it was busy with students working on their projects. It was great to catch up with the folk and particularly one of my fellow graduates who has gone on to be an instructor there. He never got to leave.

I had been asked previously by CodeClan if they could compile my 16 weeks of blogs while there into a PDF book.

Of course, that was my response and they had been working on it with my pictures and all. I got the first look and was amazed to find it has over 80 pages. It should be available via the CodeClan website soon. I'm quite excited to see it go live. I have never actually gone back and read through what I produced last year. Hopefully, the spelling and bad grammar have been fixed. I will add a link here later.

Looking back now, CodeClan was much more than just learning to code.

It was a complete career reset and the start of a very different chapter of life and work.

At the time it felt risky. In hindsight, it was one of the best decisions I made.

This also connects closely to my reflections on meaningful work and career change.

A lot of the thinking behind this transition started much earlier with my interest in early computing and programming.

Learning new technical skills can completely change the direction of your career and life.

Why We Stopped Tracking Bugs in Excel

One thing I’ve noticed over the years is that software projects often become harder to manage because the systems around them become unnecessarily complicated.

At the time, we were tracking bugs in spreadsheets, and it quickly became messy with multiple versions, email chains, and poor visibility across the team.

The Problem with Spreadsheet Tracking

I hate managing software faults with a spreadsheet. It normally ends in a mess, with multiple versions, poorly formatted, emailed here there, and everywhere.

The real issue wasn’t the spreadsheet itself—it was the lack of visibility, ownership, and workflow around the process.

To avoid this and not having access to a real software bug-tracking tool like fogbugz I quickly set up something in Trello.

Why Trello Worked Better

Trello is brilliant and I have many boards for various jobs on the go at one time. It is a simple free-to-use tool for managing simple tasks and workflows.

I set up 6 lists flowing from left to right. New bugs can be added by the team or by the customer. They can be entered directly as a new card or via email by links provided. The email to the board facility is brilliant and it will create a new card automatically.

Visual Workflows and Team Collaboration

The bug tracker board can be accessed by anyone who has access to the team. When connected to the team they can then take control of individual bugs and they can be assigned a bug. So at a glance, you can see John is working on bug #27, and Tom is testing #32. When John has completed the fix for bug #27 he can move the bug to the ready for test list and assign the bug to Tom. When Tom tests the bug and it passes the test Tom can move it to Done. If it is not fixed he can move it back to in progress and assign it back to John and add a comment as to why it did not pass the test.

What made the system effective wasn’t complexity—it was visibility. Everyone could immediately see what was happening, who owned what, and where bottlenecks were appearing.

Colors can be added to each bug indicating the criticality of the fault. So at a glance, you quickly see the red for critical and can concentrate on these first.

Bugs can include attachments, so you can take a screenshot of a fault and quickly add it to the bug to help with the resolution. You can add multiple items to a bug, so if there are a number of similar faults these can be grouped into one bug and make use of the checklist facility. Tick them off as they are resolved.

What Stayed With Me

So there you go. Trello as a bug tracker. It's not perfect, but I set up ours in under 10 minutes, you can have your whole team collaborating together working through problems or changes. It's much better than yet another Excel spreadsheet and you can see at a glance visually the status of the bugs.

Looking back, this probably reinforced something I still believe now: simple systems that people actually use are often more effective than complicated processes designed for perfection.

A surprising amount of software delivery problems are really workflow and communication problems underneath.

This also connects closely to my thoughts on overcomplication in systems and how unnecessary complexity often creates more problems than it solves.

It links naturally to my reflections on understanding systems properly rather than simply adding more layers around them.

Good systems are often simpler and more visible than people expect.

The Year I Took Back Control and Changed Career at 46

Last week CodeClan contacted me and asked if I would write them an article for their website. Of course, I would be delighted to. Apparently, someone had been in touch and was looking to change careers, they hated their job and would like to study coding. However, they thought at 46 they were too old. Well I am 46 (old?) and I did it (I actually started at CodeClan when I was 45, but that's splitting hairs)

When Everything Changed

So almost a year ago my work life took a turn for the worse and came crashing down. My "position was put at risk". Redundancy was inevitable. I was caught up in a failing Oil and Gas industry, failing department, and failing management.

Looking back now, this was one of the biggest turning points in my life. At the time it felt frightening, uncertain, and financially risky. But it also became the start of an entirely new career, new friendships, and a completely different direction in life.

The situation gradually became unhealthy and unsustainable, and eventually I decided it was time to leave.

There I was 46, had a wife and kids to support, had a poor job market (Aberdeen), and had lots of free time. I was tired of having busted a gut for the same company for the past 22. I needed a change.

Discovering CodeClan

A few chance meetings and a conversation led me to look up CodeClan. A small education facility in Edinburgh offering a software coding boot camp. It sounded interesting. I'd heard about boot camps, it's all about coding, pizza, and table tennis.

The CodeClan course was 16 weeks of full-time study and when (if) you finish you will have a new qualification in software development. A chance for me to get out of Oil and Gas, change an industry and get into Tech.

I love Tech, and 30 years ago I learned some coding at university (Pascal and assembly language) as part of my BEng in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. However, I have never had any proper code training. Things have moved on a lot. Being able to retrain would great and possibly a chance for a rest (I wish!).

I applied and was asked down for an interview at the CodeClan office in Edinburgh. I found a super friendly bunch of people, a real buzz, and the atmosphere was exciting. There were discussions of employee partners doing new things with code. As I looked about I could imagine I was in Silicon Valley.

I was offered a place in cohort 7 and I was lucky to be granted funding from the Transition Training Fund (woohoo! Go me). This is a fund set up to help oil and gas workers retrain having been made redundant. That's me so I applied. It paid for the bulk of my course fees.

I discussed it with my family if they would survive without me during the week for the next 16. Happily, we all agreed, and if there was a chance to improve my prospects in Aberdeen why not.

Starting Again at 46

Sitting with new friends at codeclanSo I accepted the place and my start date was set at a few months away. I had the whole summer school holidays with my boys to enjoy first (how many people can do that?).

Of course, summer rushed by, and before I knew it I was on a train to Edinburgh to meet the rest of my cohort and pick up my Mac Book Pro (you get one to borrow for the duration of the course). There I met 20 other cohorts all eager to get started. It was a half-day warmup session to make sure your Mac is working and meet each other. Back on the train home, I had my first chance to work on the 3 weeks of homework before the real start (that takes the course to 19 weeks in total, plus I had two two-week breaks at Christmas... So I guess it was 21 weeks for us).

The three weeks whizzed by and I was back down to Edinburgh to start for real. This time I was a commuter, up at 4am on a Monday morning, driving or train to Edinburgh and heading home to Aberdeen on a Friday afternoon. It was hard. I stayed with friends, some weeks in Edinburgh and some weeks in Stirling. I was now a student so keeping costs down was super important, I had no income.

I met up again with my cohorts and we had a day of induction and team building before we were thrown headlong into code.

Life Inside the Bootcamp

16 weeks of intense study took over my life. I had to eat sleep and breathe code. The commuting was a pain but I got comfortable in my new routine.

Coding is also hard! It's mentally exhausting. It's a journey of peaks and troughs. Peaks when you spend ages trying to get something working and it finally clicks. Troughs when you spend ages trying to get something working.

But I gradually became familiar with the format of the boot camp and coding became easier.

Lectures and code along in the morning then paired programming in the afternoon, and finally the joy of joys more coding as homework. Thursday nights were a chance to cry into your beer with your cohorts or to discuss how brilliant your code was. Thursday night was social night and homework-free.

The rest is a bit of a blur and thankfully I did a weekly blog (encouraged by CodeClan) to record my time.

Before I knew it I was graduating and had a new SQA qualification in software development. More important than that I'd had a ball and I'd gained 20 brilliant new friends. This was a surprise but so glad, and it alone made it all worthwhile.

What surprised me most was how energising learning something completely new could be.

Back home in Aberdeen at the end of January, it was all over and I was back to having lots of free time and spending time with my family.

I had my new bit of paper with my SQA on it.

It was time to start thinking about working again. I was refreshed and ready to get back to it.

From Oil and Gas to Web Development

I was keen on web development so applied for some jobs in Aberdeen and at the same time started putting myself forward for some freelance work under the guise of www.udnysolutions.co.uk

I'd say my friends in Edinburgh had it easier (don't tell them) as there is a tech boom down there and plenty of CodeClan employer partners to choose from.

Aberdeen doesn't yet, but it's trying. I expected a long wait and many rejections.

While I applied for a few jobs I received a freelance contract to update and refresh a local business website. That kept me busy. Udny Solutions had its first job.

I was then thrilled to be invited for an interview with Aberdeen City Council as a Web Developer (perfect!). Suit and tie on I went for an interview with some super nice people and it must have gone well as I was offered the position the following day.

I was chuffed to bits to accept. I am now a Web Developer and I have a shiny new badge with my picture and big bold letters "Web Developer" on it.

Looking Back on the Decision

So do I miss my old job? Not really, I miss some of the people. It ended up being more about faff than engineering.

Was being made redundant a bad thing? For me I'd have to say in hindsight, No, I needed a change. I was stuck in a rut. I had spent too long with one company and got little back for it.

Was going to CodeClan worth it? Definitely. Well worth it in fact. I now have a qualification, I had a great experience and gained lots of new friends, and now a new job in tech.

Looking back now, it’s strange to realise how much of my later career started from that single decision to retrain. The path eventually led into web development, accessibility, digital services, automation, civic technology, AI, and many of the systems and projects I still work on today.

So yeah I'm a Web Developer with a newfound passion for tech.

A lot of the same themes around learning differently and problem solving also appear in my reflections on visual thinking.

Changing career also eventually reshaped how I think about work, flexibility, and balance in posts like working from home.

Changing career at 46 felt risky at the time, but looking back it completely changed the direction of my life.

A lot of the same curiosity, problem solving, and love of technology that started during this period still shapes the systems, projects, and digital work I do today.

When Two CodeClan Graduates Crossed Paths in Civic Tech

Looking back now, this post captures one of my first real introductions to civic technology platforms, digital services, and the wider public sector tech world. At the time it just felt like another training course. In hindsight, it became the beginning of a much larger journey into forms, workflows, automation, and digital transformation.

Training Felt Different After CodeClan

So this week I was in training for a couple of days. In the old days, this would have been a game of listening and trying to stay awake. However after 16 weeks of intensive teaching at CodeClan a couple of days was a breeze.

Discovering Firmstep and Digital Services

The training was in the customer experience platform CEP of a product by a company called FirmStep. It goes hand in hand with their Content Management System CMS. You can think of CMS as the website and CEP as the application for forms, processes, and workflows for customers visiting the website.

The guy training (Mathew) had travelled up from Edinburgh for a couple of days. The training was very hands-on and we were quickly creating processes, designing forms, making data, and integrations.

When Two Cohorts Collided

Mathew spotted my cohort 7 sticker proudly displayed on my laptop and queried what it was from. It's the class sticker for my cohort when I studied at CodeClan. It turns out that Mathew is also a CodeClan graduate from cohort 3. He graduated in April 2016 and joined FirmStep.

The Small World of Tech

It was really good to chat about our time at CodeClan and how we found the whole experience. I had done a week of Ruby on Rails but Mathew had not. The course must have evolved between Cohort 3 and Cohort 7. It's cool to think that two completely different businesses or workplaces that have employees that came from the same coding school can help each other out.

Later in the week, I had another short overview of the CMS platform via video call with a guy based in Canada. It all looks very straightforward and not unlike the Jimdo product I use to do my own websites and this blog. The CMS is very much fill in the blanks with your content and the product takes care of all the code and configuration. I guess this is a good thing in terms of speed and reliability. Probably not so good if you like to code.

Early Thoughts on Civic Technology

In other news, the CivTech challenges were published this week. Seven in total (I thought there was to be 8).

There is quite a range in there. Quite a few if not all could be solved by tech and software. I have been mulling them over this week thinking of possible solutions. I will need to see if Udny Solutions can come up with a viable entry. Who knows. It's worth a try. Watch this space...

Oh and news from cohort 7. There have been 2 more of us who have secured jobs (edited actually 3) this week. Both on the same day. That must be the majority of us are now gainfully employed in the tech industry. Well done guys! Hopefully, our paths may cross in the future.

Looking Back at Where It Led

I have been asked by CodeClan to do a blog post for them on my journey over the past year. I will either post it here or provide a link. Depends on what exciting things happen next week.

It’s strange looking back at this now because so much of my later career ended up revolving around exactly these kinds of systems.

Forms, workflows, automation, accessibility, digital services, integrations, and civic technology all gradually became a major part of the work I would go on to do.

A lot of this also connects closely to my fascination with understanding and improving systems in posts like why I like fixing things.

Looking back, this was one of my first real steps into the world of digital services, workflows, and civic technology.

Why It Felt So Good to Be Hands-On Again

Looking back now, I think this was the point where I rediscovered how important meaningful hands-on work was to me. For years I had gradually drifted further away from engineering and closer towards meetings, management, process, and office politics. This role felt like reconnecting with the part of work I actually enjoyed.

So I get to be hands-on again.

Drifting Away From Engineering

I spent years in my last job working my way up the ranks from junior software engineer to engineer, senior, lead, and then principal. I picked up a growing team peaking at about 10 folks. It became inversely proportional to the number of hands-on meaningful work I actually did. It was more about meetings, plans, and justifying what you needed to do.

I have always thought when a company employs you as an engineer they want you for your brilliant engineering skills, Then you do a good job and they promote you... you then do less engineering, and they want you to deal with Faff (office politics, office politics, failings of others). You are not trained in Faff and you are not good at it but you manage. So they promote you again and you do even less engineering and have to deal with more Faff (runny noses, timesheets, holiday forms). Before you know it you are promoted again and you find yourself as an engineering manager (a job you are not trained for) and you no longer do any engineering whatsoever. So you are now doing a job you are not very good at and don't do any work that you are good at...

Getting Back to Meaningful Work

I am in a small team involved with updating and creating a new website. My role is to create processes in the website's customer experience platform (CEP).

Learning Civic Technology Platforms

It's all part of a content management system (CMS) which seems like a whizzy bit of software. I have read somewhere that it is used by quite a few councils in the UK so it's well used and there are support services and forums for help if needed.

Why Hands-On Work Matters

tree next to council building with some abstarct art of a golferIt doesn't take away from the hands-on-ness (couldn't think of a word) because it may be super whizzy but it is just a bunch of clever nuts and bolts and it is up to you to engineer solutions for the CEP processes.

So far I have been tasked with the process and workflows for the waste and recycling services. Basically is a customer accessing the website giving their details making a request and behind the scenes, the CEP process I program will automate the output of the requests.

I have had a play with it this week and have processes working from end to end, generating tasks, emails, and responses. There is some HTML and CSS involved and also some data structures to name and format.

Next week I have a couple of days of formal training to attend on the CEP and also one on the CMS. The CMS is the front-facing website part.

It's the end of week 3 as a web developer and I couldn't be happier. In fact, all the people I am now working with seem happy. Perhaps it's contagious?

A Different Kind of Commute

I'm even happy with my commute even though it's part car and part bus and involves some walking. I drive for 15 minutes without getting stuck in traffic. I hop on a bus and have another 15 into town. This morning's journey was a hydrogen bus, so calm and almost silent (Sitting on the bus I check my emails, plan for the day and write my blog). I then walk for 5 minutes.

This week for Udny Solutions I did a training evening with a client to show them how to manage and update their website themselves. They were amazed at how easy it is compared to their old flat HTML one. This was key for them wanting to make news updates and add new pictures themselves. It went well and I am super happy to hand over what I created. Roll on more opportunities like that. There is one more hopefully in the pipeline.

Looking Back at the Transition

It’s strange looking back now and realising how much this period shaped the direction of my later career.

At the time I was simply happy to be building things again, learning new systems, and solving practical problems.

What I didn’t realise was that this would gradually lead into years of work around digital services, workflows, automation, accessibility, and civic technology.

This all came shortly after my decision to retrain and completely change career through CodeClan.

A few weeks later I also reflected on unexpectedly crossing paths with other CodeClan graduates while working in civic technology in When Two Cohorts Collide.

A lot of this also connects closely to why I enjoy fixing systems and understanding how things work.

Looking back, this was the point where I rediscovered how much I enjoy practical problem solving and building systems that genuinely help people.

A lot of the same mindset around workflows, usability, automation, and meaningful technical work still shapes the projects and reflections I continue to write about today.

Could Aberdeen Become Scotland’s Next Tech Hub?

Looking back now, this post captured a moment when Aberdeen was starting to think seriously about what might come after oil and gas.

At the time, Scotland’s tech industry felt exciting, fast-growing, and heavily concentrated around Edinburgh, Dundee, and Glasgow.

I remember wondering whether Aberdeen could reinvent itself as part of that technology shift.

So is Aberdeen missing out on the tech industry boom?

Scotland’s Growing Tech Industry

The tech industry in Scotland is reported to be worth £5 Billion! The bulk of this is scooped up by Edinburgh, Dundee, and Glasgow... Skyscanner, FanDuel, and FreeAgent plus more in Edinburgh, the Thriving Games industry in Dundee, and a new Tech hub in Glasgow.

There is a real buzz right now around tech companies and startups.

Is Aberdeen being left behind and missing out? Aberdeen could do with a boost at this time. In 2016 Scotland employed 84,000 people in tech. And this year there is even more demand. There was huge demand for developers and digital skills at the time, especially around web and mobile technologies.

Could Aberdeen Compete?

It doesn't need any natural resources (sorry oil!) it doesn't need to be geographically located anywhere. It doesn't need a huge investment, It doesn't even need good weather and sun.

It needs clever people, space, and ideas. We have the people, We have plenty of space (the shiny new Aberdeen International Business Park is two-thirds empty), And ideas that are free.

So what is being done in Aberdeen to get more into this tech boom.

We have the Business Gateway and its elevator program. A brilliant scheme. There is also talk of a Grey Matters program to get business folk together and identify and create new businesses. There are tech meetups including the Entrepreneurs Club.

CodeClan, Startups, and New Opportunities

I met this week with the guys from CodeClan who were up north on a jolly to Aberdeen to see if there is a demand for people wanting to learn to code. They met with potential employee partners (who need coding graduates) and potential students (skilled people let down by oil looking to retrain). Putting the two together makes so much sense.

I mentioned CivTech North, something I'm eagerly awaiting to find out more about and what the 8 tech challenges will be from the public sector.

Early Signs of Digital Transformation

And two weeks in and there is lots of talk of tech there. ACC seems very tech-savvy. I've been in meetings and presentations where Artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, 3D printing, and even robots have been discussed. (Count me in...)

ACC also rolled out last week its new (free) city wifi which covers Union Street and other parts of the city center. A real boost for tech buzz and I am happily uploading this free via the city center scheme as I type.

Imagining a Different Future for Aberdeen

So it would be good to see a CodeClan office opening in Aberdeen city, and possibly a CodeBase like Edinburgh. CodeBase Edinburgh is an old council building filled with tech startups. Aberdeens Code Base needs to be in the center of the city rather than the outskirts. It will give the pubs, restaurants, and shops an added boost of more people in the center, and as the startups flourish (Skyscanner-like) additional premises in the city center can be occupied boosting business further.

I think Aberdeen needs more though.

So come on Aberdeen let's bring some of the £5 billion to the northeast and give Aberdeen an additional business beyond oil and tourism. I for one am trying to be part of it.

Looking Back at Those Predictions

Reading this back now is interesting because many of the themes discussed here did gradually become reality.

Aberdeen has continued investing in digital services, technology, innovation, and diversification beyond oil and gas, although probably more slowly and unevenly than many people hoped in 2017.

What stands out most to me now is the optimism around technology, learning, and the idea that entirely new industries could emerge from periods of uncertainty.

In other news, the first website I created through Udny Solutions went live that week. It was bright, colourful, and aimed at a local playgroup, and at the time I was incredibly proud simply to have built something real for a client.

This was all happening shortly after my own decision to retrain and change career through CodeClan.

At the same time I was also rediscovering how much I enjoyed meaningful technical work again in From Meetings Back to Meaningful Work.

Looking back, I was fascinated by how technology, digital services, and new ideas could reshape both careers and entire cities.

Nearly a decade later, I still find myself thinking about many of the same themes — civic technology, digital transformation, automation, accessibility, and how systems can genuinely improve people’s lives.

Starting My New Life as a Web Developer at Aberdeen City Council

Looking back now, this was one of the moments where my entire career direction genuinely started to change.

After years in engineering and oil and gas, walking into a completely new environment as a web developer felt both exciting and slightly surreal.

At the time, I had no idea how much this role would eventually shape the next decade of my life.

I started on Tuesday at the Marischal College office in the center of Aberdeen. Wow, what a nice place to be. I thought working at the new AIBP office in Dyce would be hard to beat. But I think Marischal College has it by a nose. Super new, clean, open, wired for tech, has great architecture, and is right in the center of town.

The First Morning Felt Like the First Day of School

My first day was a quick drive into the park and ride in Bridge of Don and jump on a bus. I had to laugh as on the bus was a mate from Udny also off to his first morning in his new job. We both had a report time of 9:30, we both had our smart new clothes on, and had our packed lunches and play pieces in our school bags. It was good to pass the time on the first bus ride for a while.

Starting Again in a New Career

It's official, I'm a Web Developer I have signed a year's contract and it says it on my shiny new badge.

I use it to swipe in and out every day and the system automatically tracks my time. Hooray, no more time sheets! no more chasing someone for a cost code! No more having my cost code shut down mid-job! No more justifying to a PM that I need to book a couple of hours on their project having done the work they asked for. It's like a shackle has been removed.

Discovering a Different Working Culture

So what does Web Developer mean in reality? The first couple of days were getting settled in reading and working through presentations, core values, HSE, and the eLearning tutorials. I met hundreds of new people in the department. (all super nice). It's a Hot Desking environment (working from home is encouraged) so it's sitting where you fancy that is free when you come in. Plugin your laptop, log into your phone (I have a real phone again… no more stupid Madonna headphones!). So far so good as you can be sitting with a group of different people every day.

Learning New Technology and Systems

Robert the Bruce Statuse outside Marischal College AberdeenI had been given a new Windows laptop and was quickly readjusting to a different environment after spending a lot of time using Macs during CodeClan.  I need to get the hang of the mouse scrolling in the wrong direction and have the @ symbol in a different location on the keyboard again.

I also have a few interesting applications installed as default which I am keen to see if I get to use. These include Visual Studio 2015, Android SDK tools, and Java Development Kit.

Oh, and one more that made me chuckle is PaintShop Pro... Oh, PaintShop Pro how I have missed you. It was key to drawing graphics for Master Control Station screens many many moons ago. Many an hour I would be there drawing lines in a .BMP files frustrated knowing there were vector graphics packages out there. But hey I may laugh, I have used it already to resize a graphic file.

I have also noticed quite a few of my new colleagues are Trello converts and have a number of Trello boards on the go to manage their tasks and workflows.

So I'm back to using Outlook to organize my work email and calendar.

It's quite refreshing to start with an empty, inbox, empty calendar, and no overdue tasks. I was hoping to set up the same rules linked to developer buttons that I had set up in my last job to manage my inbox. So far I've failed and I think it's because some of Outlook has been locked down. I like a button that runs a rule that moves any read mail that I have not specifically flagged into my archive folder. That way all that is in my inbox is something that is unread or flagged and I need to do something about it. All the rest can go to the archive. I will have another try to set up the rule.

From Engineering Into Web Development

Morning bus journey into Aberdeen city centre on the first day working at Aberdeen City CouncilI can’t give specifics on what I'm going to be doing (I'm still figuring it out myself) but I will be helping develop a new website in a team of about 6.

It will be based on Drupal, which is similar to WordPress. I had some experience with WordPress when I created the Hill of Fiddes website a few years ago. It is a CMS which is one of my new TLA or buzzwords I need to remember… Content Management System. It is based on the language PHP (another TLA… Three Letter Acronym), and it will be hosted on Amazon Web services.

I have run through the Code Academy Tutorial on PHP which is a scripting language with similarities to HTML. It runs on the server side of the web interface rather than being in the browser like JavaScript. Oh, and it needs a semicolon at the end of every line. Don’t forget that semicolon!

The new website seems quite a big ask with lots of parts that need to be done. It does however have an MVP for its first release. Thanks, CodeClan if I don’t use the languages you taught me at least you made me aware of the Minimal Viable Product.

Looking Back at the Beginning

Reading this back now is strange because so many of the systems, technologies, and ideas mentioned here eventually became a huge part of my later career.

At the time though, I was simply excited to be learning again, building things again, and working in technology for the first time professionally.

What started as a one-year contract gradually became the foundation for years of work around digital services, accessibility, workflows, automation, and civic technology.

This all came shortly after my decision to retrain and completely change career through CodeClan.

A few weeks later I also reflected on how refreshing it felt to be hands-on and building things again.

Looking back, many of the same themes around digital services, workflows, automation, and civic technology still shape much of the work I do today.

Looking back, this was the beginning of a completely new chapter in my life and career.

What started as excitement about web development gradually evolved into years of work around digital services, workflows, accessibility, automation, and civic technology.

HOW MUCH IS MY APP WORTH?

So I am developing my own software application. It's a medical app to help people with certain conditions. It's early days and I think it is possible.

I can't say exactly what it is but it could be mobile for use during the day, and an online interface for a more detailed view and review later. It had me thinking about how I would monetize it.

We buy the occasional app from the App Store for my boys, normally I get them to aim for free apps, but every so often there is one they want for 79p or £1 something. I think the most I have been persuaded to pay was £3.99.

Free is fine but it normally doesn't give all the functionality or has some features you want to be locked in till you pay an additional sum, or you are force-fed adverts with a banner or a video on a countdown timer. I don't like these so free is out.

If the default is 79p this seems ok, but how much would it really be worth at this price? A quick Google and the condition I am hoping to help people with affects 1 in 25,000 people. So in the UK, there are roughly 64 million people, which means there are possibly 2560 people that I could help.

This makes my app worth about £2000 in the UK assuming all want to buy in. But that is not realistic. If I am lucky I may get 5% of people buying my app which would bring my app value down to £101.12… How much?

I calculate it would take me about 1000 hrs to develop, and that value would give me an hourly rate of 10p an hour. Time to put the brakes on and have a re-think. If I reverse the calculation instead it may be better.

I'd like at least £15 per hour, So that would make my app worth £15000, so I would need to sell nearly 19000 apps to make it worthwhile at 79p.

Oh and I'm also forgetting I won't get all of the 79p, the app store will take 30% so that's it down to 55p, which is an app value of £70.40. That's even less! I would need to sell 27000 copies more than the people in the UK that would need it.


I could put the price up, and cost it per user for the development. Sticking with the 5% take-up of the people with a need in the UK which would be 128 people. To cost my app it would make each copy cost £117. And add on the 30% app store fee, which is up to £152 per user. Again I'm not sure this would fly. I need to think of a different way to monetize my app.

It's an interesting subject and I have only just scratched the surface here, I was at a tech meet-up last week, and this was one of the hot topics discussed. Which was how much is software worth. The feeling was that the perceived value of software is much lower today than it was a few years ago. This might have to do with the App Store and everyone buying some sort of software at the 79p and carrying it with them on their phone. Anyway, it's something that I am thinking of at the moment.

It's just a short one this week. I have been super busy. My first commercial website is almost ready to go live. I have gone through a few iterations of change with the client which has made it more polished and I am pleased with the result.
